One person killed as earthquake hits holiday spot Crete
An earthquake around 6.0 on the Richter scale hit Crete this morning, killing one person and leaving 11 others injured.
It was one of a series of earthquakes felt by locals in the holiday destination this morning. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the largest quake had a depth of 1.24 miles.
The man reportedly died when the dome of a church that was being renovated in the town of Arkalochori caved in.
Some roads were closed in Crete due to a landslide, which crushed a car, according to AccuWeather. A tsunami risk warning has also been issued by local authorities
Schools as well as a number of holiday-goers have been evacuated from nearby hotels, according to reports.
Residents flocked in the streets of the village near the epicentre, alongside rubble from damaged buildings. Many buildings had been damaged from the quake, which was on the higher end of the Richter scale, according to civil protection authorities.
