One cm of snow forecast for London; transport system will almost certainly collapse

Commuters should probably prepare themselves for hours of disruption and delays to services, because a modicum of snow is forecast to land in London today. 

 

The white stuff that seems to take our infrastructure services by surprise every year is expected to reach the capital at around 3pm today, settling in some areas in and around the capital, the Met Office has said. 

 

Greater London, Sussex, Kent, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Berkshire are among the counties affected by this latest weather warning to be issued as the cold front makes its way from the north of England into the commuter belt.  

 

Showers will turn into sleet, snow and hail later this afternoon and into tomorrow morning. One to two centimetres of snow could “settle almost anywhere”, the forecaster said, with higher ground likely to get up to five centimetres. 

 

Most areas are unlikely to see large amounts of snow but icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces, the Met Office said, noting there was a risk of travel disruption and difficult driving conditions as a result.
