Olympics medal hopeful Idowu suffers fresh injury setback
OLYMPIC silver medallist Phillips Idowu was last night revealed to have suffered a fresh injury setback after withdrawing from Team GB’s training camp in Portugal.
The triple jumper remained in London to receive treatment on the same hip injury that prevented him from competing at this month’s London Grand Prix though he may yet arrive in Portugal at a later date.
“In training recently Phillips has had an ongoing injury problem and we have not been able to go at things 100 per cent,” said Idowu’s coach Aston Moore. “At the weekend Phillips told me he would continue to seek treatment from a private physio in London and would not travel to prepare in Portugal, although he may join us here later.
“He is an experienced athlete who I have worked with for more than four years and we will assess the situation again in the coming days.”
The last time Idowu competed was on 1 June in Oregon; since then, in addition to his withdrawal from the London Grand Prix, he has missed out on athletics meetings in Olso and Paris, and the Olympic trials in Birmingham. London 2012’s triple jump qualifying is on 7 August.
