Ohuruogu: I may miss Euros
OLYMPIC champion Christine Ohuruogu has told City.A.M she is likely to miss next month’s European Championships in Barcelona.
Ohuruogu, 26, was absent from the 400m startline at last weekend’s Aviva UK Championships in Birmingham after picking up an untimely quadricep muscle injury in training.
She was initially upbeat about the prognosis but further medical tests have not been so encouraging. But after helping Mayor Boris Johnson light the flame at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, an event where she cut her sporting teeth during her schooldays in Newham, she admitted time was running out.
“It’s going to be really tight to make Barcelona,” she admitted.“The doctors are being cautious and saying I won’t make it but I’m stubborn and I will do everything I can to push the rehab. The timing is off but injuries are just part and parcel of what we do as athletes.
“They are frustrating and upsetting but no-one is going to take any risks because it’s a long season with the Commonwealth Games in October.
“I just need to find the right balance between training sensibly and going overboard and that has often been my problem.”
More than 6,000 youngsters from across London’s 33 boroughs will take part in this weekend’s Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, making it the largest youth sports event in Europe.
