Nokia reportedly ready to axe around 250 jobs at US site
Phone maker Nokia has slashed around 250 jobs at one of its sites in the US, and could cut another another 250 positions in the future, according to reports from local media.
In a statement, Nokia confirmed jobs would be lost at its site in Naperville, but did not disclose the exact number of losses.
It comes as the Finnish firm looks to make €1.2bn (£1.06bn) in savings by the end of this year, after it acquired Franco-American rival Alcatel-Lucent in 2016. The Illinois site was previously owned by Alcatel-Lucent before the takeover.
"Following the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent in 2016, Nokia announced a global synergy and transformation program that runs until the end of 2018, and as part of that programme we have indeed reduced headcount in Illinois," a spokesperson said.
"The scope of the reductions and the current headcount in Illinois are not being shared, as per Nokia’s disclosure policy."
Unions estimate that around 10,000 – 15,000 job positions could be at risk in the savings drive, although Nokia has not set any exact targets.
Nokia currently employs a workforce of around 103,000 people around the world.
