Nintendo Wii infringed Philips patents, UK court rules

The UK high court has ruled that Nintendo infringed patents belonging to Philips with the motion recognition in its Wii consoles in the latest battle over technology patents.

A judge ruled that the troubled console-maker infringed two Philips patents with the technology but did not infringe a third, Bloomberg reports.

In a decision today, Judge Colin Birss said the reasons Nintendo had put forward for combining a motion sensor and a camera in one unit was “unconvincing”.

Nintendo said it will appeal the decision.

Philips spokesman Bjorn Teuwsen said: "We'd been trying to come to a licensing agreement with Nintendo since 2011, but since it didn't work out we started legal action in Germany and the UK in 2012, France in 2013 and in the US last month."

“We've requested fair compensation for the use of our patents,” added Teuwsen.
