New York Report: Nasdaq down as techs slide
US STOCKS closed mixed yesterday, as the tech sector dragged the Nasdaq down and kept the S&P 500 near the unchanged mark while investors cleared the decks for Chinese giant Alibaba’s debut planned for later this week.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 43.63 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 17,031.14, the
S&P 500 lost 1.41 points, or 0.07 per cent, to 1,984.13, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 48.70 points, or 1.07 per cent, to 4,518.90.
Among the most active stocks on the index were Bank of America, down 0.30 per cent to $16.74; Nokia, up 2.27 per cent to $8.56; and Petrobras, up 0.98 per cent to $16.54.
On the Nasdaq the most actively traded were Avanir Pharma, up 85.3 per cent to $12.49; Yahoo fell 0.8 per cent to $42.55; and Apple dropped 0.03 per cent to $101.63.
