New report shows UK’s oil and gas industry faces talent drain
THE UK’S oil and gas sector is suffering from a skills shortage and is looking for talent outside of the industry, according to a report released today.
A survey from Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce and law firm Bond Dickinson found that 75 per cent of oil and gas operators and 68 per cent of contractors have a tough time hiring.
Half of all respondents said they had lost core staff this year, with many claiming that employees were going to other oil regions around the world. Operators said they were facing particular problems in recruiting managerial or professional staff, as well as those in technical or skilled roles.
Some industry figures have argued that a lack of investment and an unfavourable tax regime have led to a talent drain in the sector.
Following Tuesday’s white paper on Scottish independence, oil and gas executives surveyed said they needed more clarity on tax and regulatory issues, if the referendum were to result in independence.
