New chief for Walmart international as Cheesewright steps into breach
Walmart international, the world's biggest retailer, has appointed its first British chief executive (CEO), David Cheesewright (pictured).
Cheesewright, 51, is currently head of Walmart's European, Middle Eastern and African operations, and will become head of Walmart International.
He's taking the reins from Doug McMillon, who was chosen to replace Michael Duke as chief executive of Walmart Stores last month.
Both men will assume their new roles on 1 February 2014, with Cheesewright’s successor being named at a later date.
McMillon said of Cheesewright this afternoon:
He brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of innovation and governance.
David’s passion for sustainability will drive change that will help improve our world.
Cheesewright's career spans over 25 years. His Walmart career began in 1999 in Asda, and he later became CEO of Walmart Canada.
Speaking on his appointment, he said:
Through strong capital discipline, we will continue to invest in new stores and e-commerce growth, as well as productivity improvements that drive profitable growth and returns.
