Murtagh hangs up riding boots
IRELAND’S three-time Derby winning jockey Johnny Murtagh has announced his retirement in order to concentrate on his training career.
The 43-year-old, who rode more than 100 Group One winners, took out his training licence in May and is responsible for 45 horses based at Fox Covert Stables in County Kildare.
Murtagh said: “I wasn’t happy giving the riding 50 per cent and the training 50 per cent. It’s the right time to call it a day and put everything into the training.”
Leading Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Cue Card will miss next month’s festival due to muscle injuries, trainer Colin Tizzard confirmed yesterday.
