Murray through but leading ladies go
BRITISH No1 Andy Murray admits he will have to perform at his best if he is to advance beyond Marcos Baghdatis and into the fourth round of the men’s Olympics tennis tournament.
“I had a tough match with him at Wimbledon a few weeks ago,” said Murray. “I certainly won’t be taking anything for granted.
“It’s going to be very, very tough. He’s a very, very good grass player. I’ll need to play very well.”
Murray yesterday defeated Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 6-4 but his victory was the solitary success in an otherwise disappointing day for British contenders.
Laura Robson lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to world No 3 Maria Sharapova while Heather Watson was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Maria Kirilenko.
Robson regardless remains in contention to win a medal. She and Murray will today combine in the mixed doubles against Czechs Lucie Hradecka and Radep Stepanek after Britain was awarded a wildcard.
