Murray stutters as Nadal admits to appendicitis
BRITAIN’S Andy Murray suffered a minor hiccup on his way to a first-round victory at the Shanghai Masters yesterday – though it was nothing compared to world No2 Rafael Nadal’s abdominal problems.
Murray made repeated forehand errors in his second set against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili before winning 6-1, 7-5 to set up a meeting with Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz today.
Nadal, however, revealed he was suffering from appendicitis, yet vowed to delay surgery and go through with his second-round match against fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
“My idea is take it out, but you can imagine that I didn’t [think] much about that yet,” said the gritty Majorcan.
“I just want to try. Then when I go back home, I will talk about the situation with my doctor.”
Home fans were thrilled by world No553 Chuhan Wang, meanwhile, after the 22-year-old shocked Italian Fabio Fognini – ranked 536 players higher than him – on his debut in an ATP World Tour event.
