Murray may ignore big names in search for Lendl replacement
WIMBLEDON champion Andy Murray has hinted he may buck the trend of hiring a celebrated former player as coach following his recent split from Ivan Lendl.
Murray’s rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have both teamed up with fellow grand slam winners, in Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg, since the British No1 recruited Lendl – a move that led him to win Olympic gold, the US Open and Wimbledon.
The Scot, speaking at an event to publicise the defence of his Aegon Championships title at Queen’s Club in June, plans to study his options over the next fortnight, and says he is not looking for a like-for-like replacement for Lendl.
He said: “What I needed then is different to what I need now. There are certain things Ivan was fantastic at. He got me to where I wanted to get to – and that’s all you can ask really from a coach.
“But now I need to look forward and see the things that maybe I would like done differently and the things in my game that I can improve on, who I feel can help with that. If it is a technical thing then an ex-great player isn’t necessarily the best person.”
