Murray: Beating Raonic gives me the confidence to face Cilic
BRITISH No1 Andy Murray is adamant that the convincing nature of his victory over Milos Raonic will inspire further success in today’s US Open quarter-final with the Canadian Marin Cilic.
Murray took only two hours to secure a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 straight sets win and perform to his potential in a way that he had failed in the heat of Sunday’s win against Feliciano Lopez of Spain and believes himself to be in better condition as a consequence.
“Physically I’m feeling better than I did at the beginning of the tournament,” he said. “It’s good to play a match like that [against Raonic] at this stage.
“It gives me some confidence going into the next round for sure because I didn’t feel great after the last round.
“But you never know. Conditions change, the opponents change. You just need to make sure you’re ready for whatever your opponent is going to bring and try and get the win.”
In the women’s tournament, the defending champion Sam Stosur was yesterday eliminated by the top seed Victoria Azarenka in a tight 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
The Belarusian needed only 30 minutes to secure the opening set before Stosur’s championship pedigree inspired a closer contest in a match that guarantees Azarenka the status of world No1.
