McIlroy readies for Ryder Cup with impressive win on US soil
NORTHERN Ireland’s Rory McIlroy last night extended his outstanding run of form with victory at the BMW Championship in Indiana.
The world No1 produced a final-round 67 to secure both the championship and his third Tour victory in four with an exceptional variety of play that combined astute long drives with composure on the tournament’s greens in the pursuit of his latest success to ultimately underline his magnificent potential for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
“I felt like I was on my game more last week and I scrambled around [on Saturday],” said McIlroy, one of 12 selected for Europe’s Ryder Cup team. “I worked on the range last night and drove the ball beautifully.
“I knew if I played to my ability I would win events but I didn’t think this would come so quickly. I just want to keep this run going as long as possible. It’s great to be able to win when the field is so strong.
“I feel like I have got tremendous support on the tour, everywhere I go the support is very strong for me. I feel like this is where I belong, I’ve always wanted to play here.”
England’s Lee Westwood, another in Europe’s Ryder Cup team, tied second with Phil Mickelson of the USA on 18 under, with Tiger Woods and Robert Garrigus, on 17 under, both behind in third.
The overnight leader Vijay Singh fell behind with a one over on his final round of the Championship.
