London’s new fund queens
THE TOTAL value of assets under management run by female hedge fund managers has more than doubled to over $200bn (£122.8bn) in the space of a year, according to the latest Hedge Fund Journal and Ernst & Young study.
Women managed just $4.5bn in hedge fund assets last year, accounting for just three per cent of the $1.5 trillion global market.
But a surge in the number and performance of high-flying female hedge fund managers has seen their share hit ten per cent of the $2 trillion of assets now held in funds worldwide.
The money women are running is at least $100bn if allocators are included, based on the 30 portfolio managers in this year’s Hedge Fund Journal survey.
If the nine female chief operating officers from the top hedge fund firms are included, the figure is pushed up a further $100bn.
Each fund manager in the list runs at least $1bn and has been managing money for at least 10 years.
Amongst the highflying London fund managers on the list is Mina Gerowin, the top lieutenant to superstar hedge fund chief John Paulson.
Gerowin is the managing director of the New York-based Paulson & Co’s London operations, where she heads several funds.
Andrea French, the chief operating officer for trading at the elite Brevan Howard hedge fund, is another high flying female executive.
She is responsible for many of the firm’s funds, as well as a clutch of UCITS launches that lie behind Brevan’s asset growth.
Two women from rival hedge fund giant Man Group, Michelle McCloskey and Victoria Parry, also make the list.
Another 34 top female fund managers also make up the list, from the financial centres of Singapore, Hong Kong, Geneva and Paris.
Michael Serota, global hedge fund practice co-leader at Ernst & Young said: “We congratulate the women that made the list this year, and we look forward to working with them and their colleagues for many years to come.”
