London faces second day of strike misery
A SECOND day of strike action on the Tube is set to bring further travel woe to commuters today, as part of a union dispute with Transport for London that business groups have slammed.
Around a third of all Tube services ran yesterday, with eight of the 11 lines operating for most of the day. Several stations including Stratford were forced to close during the morning rush as huge crowds gathered in the hope of catching a train.
TfL brought in 200 extra buses, double the number it had initially planned, to handle the extra passengers above ground.
Around 86 per cent of regular users braved the transport system yesterday, Oyster data from TfL showed.
London First warned that tourism is being damaged by the walkouts. “At the end of the day shopping trips and cultural visits can be put off or cancelled,” said boss Jo Valentine.
The London Chamber of Commerce has said that the strikes could cost the economy £50m a day. But the Centre for Economics and Business Research estimated the damage at around £10m a day, arguing yesterday that advances in mobile working and a shift in traffic patterns justify its lower figure.
“What is less easy to understand is why the strike is taking place at all,” said executive chairman Douglas McWilliams.
Mediator Acas said last night that the parties involved in the strikes had agreed to come in and continue exploratory talks at its offices tomorrow.
