Liverpool chiefs know nothing about football, blasts Benitez
FORMER Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has launched a scathing attack on his previous employers, claiming they “understood nothing about football”.
The Spaniard, right, had a strained relationship with American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett before leaving the club in the summer after six years to join Inter Milan.
Now Benitez has lifted the lid on the boardroom infighting at the club by insisting it is easier to work with a more knowledgeable boss in current president Massimo Moratti.
“In my last year at Liverpool I had directors who knew nothing about soccer and you couldn’t talk about football with them,” he said.
“You can with Moratti. My relationship with [Inter Milan] president Massimo Moratti is
good, he is a man who knows his football.”
Benitez led Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005 and an FA Cup victory in
2006, but soon became frustrated with the lack of funds made available to him after
Hicks and Gillett brought the club for £218.9m in February 2007. Just prior to Benitez heading to Italy, Hicks and Gillett announced they had put the club up for sale and hired British Airways chairman Martin Broughton to oversee the project.
Benitez left this summer to replace Jose Mourinho at Inter and his team have made a steady start to the season, lying second in the table, unbeaten after three games.
Under new boss Roy Hodgson, however, Liverpool currently lie fifth from bottom in the Premier League.
