Lean back and read the latest City tome on women at the top
HOT ON the heels of Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg’s highly publicised book Lean In, a London businesswoman is about to publish her own autobiographical and instructional tome – Heels of Steel.
Founder of networking site We Are The City, Vanessa Vallely – a former employee of Barclays, Merrill Lynch and Royal Bank of Scotland– has written about her journey “as she scales and slips up and down the corporate ladder, digging her heels of steel in to avoid being absorbed by the politics and alpha male behaviour”.
With endorsements from the likes of fund manager Nicola Horlick, Vallely is impressively candid in her account of her career climb – including regrets over being embarrassed about her Cockney accent and throwing a salad over a particularly obnoxious ex-boss.
Not a very Sandberg-esque move – but one that many of Vallely’s peers might wish they’d tried at some point.
