Labour MPs back Fallon to grill Treasury
MICHAEL Fallon is set to win the chairmanship of the influential Treasury select committee (TSC) today, after attracting significant support from Labour MPs.
The MP for Sevenoaks has been the deputy chair of the committee for the last eight years, where he gained a reputation for grilling ministers and other witnesses with tough, insightful questions.
Fallon has won the backing of a significant number of influential Labour MPs, including Andy Love and John Mann, who both sit on the committee.
And John McFall, the tenacious former MP who chaired the committee before standing down at the last election, is also advising Labour colleagues to back Fallon.
Shadow ministers such as Gerry Sutcliffe and Phil Woolas are also said to be supportive of Fallon, although they have not made their position public as the shadow cabinet has agreed to remain neutral.
Yesterday, a senior Labour MP told City A.M. they believed Fallon, who first became an MP in 1983, would be able to keep the “youthful Treasury team in check”.
He is up against fellow Tory MP Andrew Tyrie.
