Kipsang breaks world marathon record as Kenyans rule in Berlin
KENYAN Wilson Kipsang smashed the world marathon record in Berlin yesterday, knocking 15 seconds off the previous best time set by compatriot Patrick Makau at the same race two years ago.
Kipsang claimed the 2013 Berlin Marathon title by crossing the finish line in two hours, three minutes and 23 seconds, while four fellow Kenyans occupied the remaining top five places.
The victorious 31-year-old, who won the London marathon last year before claiming bronze at the Olympic Games, said that former Kenyan record-holder Paul Tergat inspired his win.
“I was really inspired by Tergat when he broke the world record here 10 years ago and I’m very happy that I was in a position to break the record on the same course,” Kipsang said.
“I’m very happy that I have won and broken the world record.”
Kenya also dominated the women’s race yesterday, with Florence Kiplagat and Sharon Cherop battling at the front before Kiplagat pulled away to win in two hours, 21 minutes and 13 seconds.
