Keeper riddle isn’t a worry, says Ferguson
MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists he is at ease with fluctuations in his choice of No1 goalkeeper as they prepare to begin their Champions League campaign against Galatasaray tonight.
Ferguson axed £17m David de Gea after he shipped three in the first two games of the season and Dane Anders Lindegaard has fared slightly better, conceding twice at Southampton before Saturday’s clean sheet against Wigan. It is unclear which will face the Turkish champions, however, yet Ferguson, despite professing defence to be his key concern, struck an uncharacter-istically nonchalant tone last night.
“The most important thing I’m trying to achieve is experience of the English game,” he said. “They are both young and don’t have the experience of an Edwin van der Sar or Peter Schmeichel so alternating is not a problem for me. That’s the policy I have been adopting and I’m comfortable with it.”
United suffered the ignominy of elimination at the first hurdle last season and have a poor recent record at home in the group stage, winning just three from their last nine.
Ferguson looks likely to recall big-money summer buys Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa, but is short of options for rotation in defence, where Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans are his only fit centre-backs.
