Kean cautious as Blackburn surge six points clear of relegation zone
BLACKBURN 2 vs SUNDERLAND 0
GOALS from winger Junior Hoilett and striker Yakubu earned relegation-threatened Blackburn a precious win over Sunderland last night and hauled them six points clear of the bottom three.
Hoilett opened the scoring with a volley from the edge of the area on 58 minutes, and Yakubu made the points safe with four minutes remaining when he headed home Bradley Orr’s right-wing cross.
A second successive Premier League win and a third in five games was greeted with huge relief at Ewood Park, but Rovers manager Steve Kean insisted his men were far from safe yet.
“It was a deserved three points and to get back-to-back wins and clean sheets at this time of the season is very important,” he said.
“Now there’s a little bit of daylight but we know there will be more twists and turns. We’ve just got to keep our momentum going.”
The result leaves Blackburn 16th in the table, five points clear of 17th-placed Bolton, who have a game in hand, while the bottom three are all a further point adrift and separated by goal difference.
It puts further pressure on QPR, who lie 18th having taken just five points from their last 10 league games, to take something from this evening’s visit of Liverpool.
