Jihadi bride Shamima Begum stripped of British citizenship
The London schoolgirl who was located in Syria after running away to join the so-called Islamic State is to have her citizenship revoked, her family have said.
Shamima Begum, who left her home in Bethnal Green at the age of 15 to join IS fighters, has begged to return to the UK after being found in a refugee camp last week.
But Begum, who is now 19, is set to have her citizenship revoked by the Home Office, her family said in a statement.
“Family are very disappointed with the Home Office’s intention to have an order made depriving Shamima of her citizenship,” Begum’s lawyer, Mohammed T Akunjee, wrote on Twitter. “We are considering all legal avenues to challenge this decision.”
The Home Office declined to comment.
