A jazz sensation comes to town
THE glittering opening of Boisdale in Canary Wharf last week was one of the most exciting in the Docklands in a long while.
One of the main attractions of the new Boisdale is its superlative jazz offering, in conjunction with Jazz FM and Aberdeen Asset Management. Jazz FM’s Discovery Show, supported by City firm Aberdeen Asset Management, is live every Wednesday night at Boisdale of Canary Wharf. Each week the Discovery Show searches far and wide to find the very best undiscovered talent in Blues, Soul, Funk and Jazz.
“This is a first for Jazz FM,” says Jazz FM’s Chief Exec, Richard Wheatly. “We are always looking for new ways to both support the extraordinary wealth of new jazz talent coming out of the UK and explore innovative programming formats. The Discovery Show will offer a perfect platform to do just that.”
The Discovery Show was launched on 14 April by revered musician Jools Holland, Boisdale’s “Patron of Music”. The first night played host to Kate Threlfall, a singer-songwriter-pianist from Liverpool, who possesses a voice of sheer beauty and unbelievable soul, and Bad Ass Brass, fresh from success after winning a Facebook competition to perform at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival.
This is the third initiative that Aberdeen Asset Management has partnered with Jazz FM. Aberdeen’s global head of marketing, Piers Currie, adds: “It fits with our own investment philosophy that always aims to unearth undervalued quality. The Discovery Show builds on an existing relationship we have already with Jazz FM that includes the “Jazz in the City” weekly City programme. Jazz lovers are also universal which appeals to us as a global business.”
If you’d rather be there in person, the week of 27 April features two extremely talented bands, Vintage Trouble and Anthony Strong. Both are absolutely not to be missed, and are among the most exciting jazz performers in the world today.
