Islamist militia occupies US embassy compound in Libyan capital
An Islamist-allied militia group has "secured" a US embassy compound in Tripoli, reports the AP.
Called Dawn of Libya, the group says it has occupied the buildings over a month after US staff were evacuated. A journalist for the AP who was invited to examine the compound said that most the equipment left by US staff was not touched although many of the windows had been smashed.
The journalist said there were still treadmills, computers and TVs inside the embassy.
According to one of the group's commander, Moussa Abu-Zaqia, the militia have been in control over the former embassy since last week, only a day after capturing the capital and its airport. The militia have called for foreign diplomats to return to Tripoli as the conflict lessened in severity.
US staff were evacuated from the embassy on 26 July.
