International Friendly: Germany play party-poopers on historic day for England women
ENGLAND 0 GERMANY 3
ENGLAND’S women attracted a record crowd of more than 45,000 for their first standalone game at Wembley but Germany spoiled the party with a clinical victory.
The crowd might have been even greater than 45,169 but around 10,000 ticket-holders did not attend the match, amid public transport disruption and bad weather.
Germany needed only six minutes to take the lead, through an own goal by England defender Alex Scott, and had victory wrapped up before half-time following two strikes by captain Celia Sasic.
It extended England’s winless run against Germany to 20 fixtures and dealt a blow to the World Cup ambitions of Mark Sampson’s team, just months before next summer’s tournament.
Scott deflected the ball into her own net under pressure from Simone Laudehr at a corner, and Sasic soon doubled the lead with a solo goal featuring a run from the half-way line.
Sasic headed a straightforward third from Tabe Kemme’s cross just before the interval, and Jill Scott’s late effort into the side-netting was the closest England came to a reply.
