Home Secretary Sajid Javid cuts holiday short to deal Channel migrants ‘major incident’

Home secretary Sajid Javid has cut his holiday short in order to deal with the growing number of migrants attempting to cross the Channel in dinghies to enter Britain.

Javid yesterday declared the issue a “major incident”after almost 70 people were intercepted attempting to reach England over the past three days.

He was also seeking an urgent call with his French counterpart over the weekend, the Home Office said.

During a visit to the Border Force offices in Dover, immigration minister Caroline Nokes told reporters that Javid would return to work on Monday.

"I can't comment on his whereabouts for security reasons, but he is on his way back and he will be at his desk on Monday.

"He is taking control of the situation and I am in regular contact with him, and we had a conference call just yesterday,” she said, according to Sky News.

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke has called for more boats to patrol the area in a bid to crack down on trafficking gangs.
