THE ENERGY industry’s top City slickers (pun intended) are set to meet for an evening of food and fine conversation at the Harvey Nash annual Oil & Gas dinner in The Dorchester’s Orchid Room tonight.
Centrica’s outgoing boss Sam Laidlaw is the evening’s guest speaker and no doubt he’ll be looking forward to meeting old boating friend Tony Hayward. The ex-BP boss and Laidlaw were once co-owners of “Bob”, the Farr 52 yacht which Hayward was controversially photographed sailing on during the Gulf oil spill.
Tony Hayward, who is running Genel Energy these days, will presumably also have a lot to chat to former colleague Brian Gilvary about. Now BP’s chief financial officer, Gilvary is a BP-lifer, having joined in 1986 – so perhaps a chance to reminisce?
Tony’s not the only T Hayward in the village though. Toby Hayward, the interim-chief of embattled Afren will also be at the dinner.
Surely one of the most important conversations of the night though, will be about Sam Laidlaw’s next move. Between recruiter Harvey Nash and a room full of energy company representatives, he’ll surely find a worthy new desk.
■ ZORBING is no longer the preserve of backpackers Down Under. No, it seems the roll-down-a-hill-in-an-inflatable-ball craze has hit corporates. Well, car manufacturer Nissan at least. The company managed to make a Zorb ball big enough to fit a Nissan Note inside and rolled it down a hill at an airfield in the Salisbury Plain. Let’s just hope it isn’t a signal of an over inflated car manufacturing market…
■ SO, BEYONCE’S gone from being one of Topshop’s most famous customers to a collaborator and Sir Philip Green seems crazy in love with the singer’s work ethic. “She’s a great dancer, one of the most hard-working and talented people in the world, who spends many hours of her life dancing, rehearsing and training,” he told WWD magazine. “Maybe she would also give me some training — you never know.” Maybe she will, Phil. But anyone hoping to get a colourful comment from Bey, which might live up to her lively persona, can think again. “I’m looking forward to participating in all aspects of this partnership,” she said. Yawn. Looks like the management speak monkeys are guiding her fingers already.
