Haiti death toll still rising
AS many as 50,000 people are thought to have died in Haiti’s devastating earthquake and three million more hurt or left homeless, as rescue teams last night continued a race against time to find survivors.
A British rescue team with heavy lifting gear and dogs reached the country yesterday but aid is so far only trickling in to the country.
The US is sending up to 3,500 troops and 2,200 marines as part of one of the biggest relief efforts in recent American history.
Some aid flights were temporarily stopped from landing yesterday because there was not enough space on the ground for more planes.
People have been wandering the streets in search of food and water as bodies pile up at hospitals, and there is still no sign of a co-ordinated relief effort.
Haitian president Rene Preval said mass burials of the dead had begun.
