Goodwood betting: Mamillius looks ready to strike for in-form Baker
Minding is the star of the show at Goodwood on Saturday in the Qatar Nassau Stakes (3.10pm).
She’s in a different league to her rivals and it’s completely understandable that she’s 2/7 with Coral. We’re not going to get rich backing her at that price, though.
The race I’m most interested in on the undercard is the seven furlong Qatar Stakes (4.55pm).
I’ve had an eye on George Baker’s MAMILLIUS ever since the son of Exceed And Excel finished second on his debut at Windsor a year ago.
That was a really impressive performance, although he was then given time and didn’t reappear until May at Newbury.
It looked like he needed that race when trailing in a well-beaten eighth, but he bounced back to win impressively at Salisbury last month.
Baker’s string are in excellent form at the moment and I’m pretty confident that Mamillius will prove to be better than his current mark of 88.
The three-year-old Goodwood handicaps are always hugely competitive and the 1m4f Qatar Handicap (2.35pm) is no exception.
Frankie Dettori has hit the crossbar a few times this week, but he can bring SHRAAOH home in front in this one.
Sir Michael Stoute’s son of Sea The Stars was backed off the boards in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot last time only to finish well down the field.
That was a particularly rough race and I fancy him to get back in the winner’s enclosure here for a trainer that excels with this type of horse.
