Get the skills by signing up to trading school
WITH the current volatility in the forex markets, many who have been relying on fundamental analysis for their FX trading may find themselves struggling. But fear not. There are trading seminars like this morning’s on binaries from GFT (www.gftuk.com) that can really improve your skills. Here we have a non-exhaustive round up of the offerings available for those who want to get ahead with their technical analysis skills. Whether online, in person and any day of the week, there’s probably something to suit your needs.
FXCM
On 21 November, FXCM will be hosting a trading seminar at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel in association with City A.M. It will feature an opening speech by our very own editor, Allister Heath.
Presented by DailyFX market analyst Alejandro Zambrano, it will focus on trading in the current volatile market. And if you like what FXCM have to offer, they also offer 15 hours of live and interactive webinars every week. “We even give our traders homework so they really work through the material, says Zambrano. “The key is to make them profitable. If they are profitable then they will trade more often and with higher leverage, this benefits FXCM and creates a win-win situation.” Go to www.fxcm.co.uk/seminar for further details.
IG INDEX
IG Index runs a range of free trading seminars at its London office next to Cannon Street station, as well as at venues across the UK and also online. “The primary objective of these is education,” says Tim Hughes, managing director of IG Index. “They allow prospective clients to understand and ask the experts about how the product works, while existing clients have the ability to learn more about the platform and the range of markets on offer.”
Hughes reports that in-person events frequently reach capacity and that the weekly webinars on Wednesday lunchtimes are also perennially popular.

TRADER MANAGEMENT
Trader Management is a company that offers a more long term and intensive approach to trading via its “live trading room”. According to Christopher Kelly, executive manager of Trader Management, seminar and webinar attendees gains free access to a live trading room service for a period of three months, giving the opportunities to see how the concepts, strategies and techniques conveyed within the events are employed on a regular basis. “This is how I believe the trading industry must progress before online trading becomes more readily accessible to those with a passion for engaging the foreign exchange market,” says Kelly. Further details can be found at www.TraderManagement.com.
CAPITAL SPREADS
“We like to think that we cater for all types of trader from the beginner or the trader who is eager to learn more about charting techniques or trading psychology to the more advanced traders,” says Angus Campbell, head of sales for Capital Spreads.
The seminars that are for complete beginners are free, held in the Institute of Directors and hosted by Campbell: “They are in the evening and last two hours, where I go through the basics of spread betting and its mechanics,” says Campbell. “I then give a demonstration of the trading platform before ending with my “golden rules” for trading. Anyone can come to this seminar, so account holders and non-account holders are welcome.”
More advanced sessions are held at the offices of Capital Spreads – the group is smaller and hosted by an outside expert. These more specialised sessions are for account holders only and charge a fee of £49. Details of upcoming sessions can be found at www.capitalspreads.com, where you can also find details of their regular online seminars.
CITY INDEX
City Index offers a variety of free in-house seminars and road shows covering a wide spectrum of courses including from beginner’s guides to technical analysis to “how to use candlestick charts to identify short term trading opportunities” and a roundup of upcoming trading opportunities for the month ahead.
“Our seminars are hugely popular with our client base and are always heavily oversubscribed and so most attendees need to sign up early,” says Joshua Raymond, chief market strategist for City Index. “The aim of our classes is to be able to cater for clients regardless of which stage of their educational journey they are on. For example, we have beginner classes which teach about how the products work and how to manage one’s trading risk, whilst intermediate and advanced classes have been designed to help take clients trading to new levels.” City Index has a road show planned for November, with the London leg taking place on 15 November.
City Index also offers online seminars. Details of these and dates of other seminars can be found at www.cityindex.com
SOCIETY OF TECHNICAL ANALYSTS
If you want something that gives you a professional qualification, the Society of Technical Analysts could be for you. It’s offerings will require a lot more homework than other options, but if you are serious about having a robust knowledge of technical analysis, then an STA course will put you on firm footing
“Technical analysis is suited to all market environments but particularly in the broad ranging, higher volatility markets of recent years,” says Murray Gunn, an STA committee member. “It provides an antidote to the lagging fundamental market analysis and an excellent risk management methodology.”
