Gatwick offers to chip in £1,000 for council tax at nearby homes
GATWICK has offered to pay £1,000 a year towards council tax for homes near the airport if it wins permission to build a second runway.
The south London airport said up to 4,100 households experience plane noise above 57 decibels, making them eligible for the compensation scheme.
Gatwick claims a new runway would affect far fewer residents than expansion at Heathrow. Both airports are on the table for the government’s Airports Commission, which will recommend a site for a new runway after next year’s general election. “Expansion at Gatwick would, without doubt, deliver many upsides for our local community in terms of jobs and investment. But we must also recognise the negative noise impacts on local people from more flights,” said Gatwick boss Stewart Wingate.
