Firms win exemptions from immigration cap
BUSINESSES have convinced the Home Office to water down plans that will limit the number of economic migrants allowed entry to the UK each year.
Firms have been lobbying hard against the cap since it was first mooted, fearful it could stop them recruiting top talent from abroad.
Business secretary Vince Cable has taken up their cause in cabinet discussions, and they are now expected to be offered some kind of exemption.
Theresa May, the home secretary, will today announce a temporary cap on economic migrants from outside the EU. Under the cap, just 24,100 workers from outside the EU will be let into the country between now and April 2011.
Labour dismissed the policy as a “gimmick”.
