The finest wine known to humanity: London has 38 on the World of Fine Wine’s annual list
Hot on the heels of yesterday's best restaurant competition, today we learned where London's best wine lists can be found.
The capital has 38 restaurants on The World of Fine Wine's annual awards, coming third in the global stakes behind New York and Sydney.
In total, 26 were given the three-star rating, making London second only to New York for the truly great tipples.
The rest of the country also fared well, with restaurants as far afield as Southampton, Edinburgh, Bray and Windemere featuring on the list.
London's three-star winners include Dabbous, Dinner by Heston, Hakkasan, Pollen Street Social, Wild Honey and The Ledbury. Withnail once called for the finest wines known to all humanity, we hope he's paying attention now.
Where are the UK's best wine lists?
The panel included wine experts such as Alder Yarrow, Elin McCoy, Ch’ng Poh Tiong, Andrew Jefford, Andreas Larsson, Francis Percival and Tom Stevenson.
In total they had to taste from more than 4,000 wine lists around the world. Tough gig.
The overall winner was New York-based Eleven Madison Park, which replaced 2014's top choice the Palais Coburg Residenz in Austria.
A one-star rating is given to a “good wine list”, a two-star rating to a “very good wine list” and a three-star rating to a “great wine list”. This grading is based on the breadth, depth, interest, quality, value, organisation and accuracy of the list.
