The fight for Europe is on Clegg tells Farage after Ukip poll win
LIBERAL Democrat leader Nick Clegg is taking the fight over membership of the European Union to Nigel Farage, warning the electorate against voting for Ukip next month.
Launching his party’s manifesto for the EU elections in Colchester today, Clegg is set to say that his party is the only one calling for the UK to remain in Europe.
“The fight is on. The isolationists are not going to get a free run of this debate any more – not when there’s so much at stake.
“Every gain they make on 22 May takes Britain a step closer to European exit and they need to be stopped. We need Liberal Democrats elected to the European parliament where we can do what’s right for Britain,” the Deputy Prime Minister will say.
However recent polls show that Clegg will have a mountain to climb this May. Yesterday a Sun/YouGov poll had Ukip on 27 per cent of the vote, just behind Labour on 30 per cent. The Lib Dems were beaten into fourth place with just a 10 per cent share.
Fellow Lib Dem Danny Alexander waded into the election debate yesterday, warning that a minority government would be bad for the country and that a hung parliament is likely in the 2015 general election.
