Euro breakaway talk cooled after peace summit
HEINEKEN Cup chiefs insist English and French clubs are not about to quit the competition, despite announcing plans for a breakaway on Tuesday.
European Rugby Cup, which also runs the Amlin Challenge Cup, met yesterday in Dublin to discuss the deadlock and later issued an upbeat statement.
“Despite recent reports, all parties involved in the formulation of a new ERC Accord, including the Ligue Nationale de Rugby and Premiership Rugby, have reaffirmed their commitment to the process,” it said.
English and French clubs want a greater share of revenue and more qualifying spaces than in the current format. Welsh, Irish and Scottish sides have so far refused to relent despite talks going back more than a year.
Any new competition to replace the Heineken Cup would not start until next season.
