England reunite Overton twins and consider historic selection
ENGLAND have added fast bowler Jamie Overton to their one-day squad ahead of tomorrow’s pivotal clash with New Zealand at Trent Bridge in a move which could see twins represent the national side in the same match for the first time.
Seamer Jamie has replaced side-strain victim Liam Plunkett and joins his brother, all-rounder Craig, in the reckoning for an international debut in a game which England must win to have a chance of victory in the five-match series.
Craig was called-up to cover the injured Chris Jordan but was not selected as England slumped to a three-wicket defeat to the Black Caps at Southampton on Sunday.
Should the Overtons be selected tomorrow or in the final clash of the series at Chester-le-Street on Saturday, they would become the first ever twins to play together for England and the first brothers since Adam and Ben Hollioake in 1997. The 21-year-old Somerset duo have both represented England under-19s and Lions, while Jamie was in the senior squad for the one-day series with Australia in 2013, but did not feature.
Batsman Ian Bell, meanwhile, boosted his red-ball form ahead of next month’s Ashes with a century for Warwickshire against Worcestershire yesterday.
Bell has struggled since scoring 143 in the first Test against the West Indies in April, amassing just 55 runs in his eight Test innings since. England captain Alastair Cook notched 80 for Essex against Derbyshire.
