England player ratings
Joe Hart 5
Under spotlight due to recent slips and endured an awful start, nearly conceding a penalty in the first minute, but the Man City man recovered as the match wore on
Gary Cahill 8
Vital blocks and interceptions, especially in a nervy first half, were key to England taking a point. Aerial power also posed threat to Ukraine from set-pieces
Jack Wilshere 5
Visitors’ lack of composure and control summed up Wilshere’s untidy display; full of willing but littered with poor passes and the odd foul. Hooked for Young late on
Theo Walcott 5
Bright start and hopeful flick on Walker’s cross late on was inches from claiming all three points, but bookended a poor performance riddled with bad passes
Kyle Walker 5
A smart tackle and early cross that almost resulted in a Walcott goal aside, Walker looked panicked in possession and struggled against Konoplienka. Booked
Ashley Cole 7
A rare composed presence in England’s defence and made one vital clearance early in second half. Offered little of his usual attacking threat in Kiev
Frank Lampard 5
Not alone but oddly anonymous display to mark his 100th cap. Sloppy passing at times and missed golden chance to head the winner from close range in injury time
Rickie Lambert 6
Game hold-up play perhaps the minimum requirement for stand-in striker, but Lambert also showed vision in trying to tee up colleagues when afforded ball
Phil Jagielka 6
Slack marking exposed in first half but fared better after the break, notably breaking from the wall to divert a goal-bound Konoplienka free-kick wide
Steven Gerrard 7
Captain led way, with goal-saving tackles, an eagerness to receive ball from back four and two 30-yard efforts in first half. Dummy header in defence was a blemish
James Milner 5
Diligent if utterly uninspired shift, one deft early touch to release Lambert aside. Failure to pick up Fedetskiy at corner almost let Ukraine defender head a winner
Substitutes
Young (Wilshere, 68): Manchester United winger made little impact when thrown into a match England had long since decided they would gladly leave with just a point. Cleverley (Walcott, 87): could do nothing in short time on field and his introduction succeeded only in wasting a few precious seconds. Jermain Defoe may wonder why he did not warrant a 15-minute cameo.
