England must win World Cup, Rooney demands
ENGLAND cannot be happy with their World Cup campaign unless they bring home the trophy, striker Wayne Rooney has declared.
The 28-year-old is gearing up for his fifth major tournament with England and third World Cup, hoping to register better performances than in 2006 and 2010 where he failed to score.
Group rivals Uruguay have doubts over the fitness of talisman Luis Suarez, who yesterday underwent a minor operation on his left knee.
And Rooney feels anything other than a historic England triumph will represent a disappointment.
“Our aim is to win the tournament,” said Rooney, assigned the No10 shirt by Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson.
“That is what we are preparing for, that is what we hope is going to happen.
“We don’t want to be going there saying we would be happy getting to a quarter-final or even a semi-final. We can go far. We have got the players and our aim is to win the tournament.”
England begin their campaign against Italy on 14 June, then take on Uruguay, before concluding Group D against Costa Rica.
