England captain Jos Buttler reprimanded for clash with Bangladesh players during one-day international defeat
England captain Jos Buttler has received an official warning for his angry reaction to goading from Bangladesh players during Sunday’s one-day international defeat in Dhaka.
Buttler turned to unleash a verbal volley and had to be ushered from the field by the match referees after he was given lbw following a review, a decision that prompted exuberant celebrations from the hosts.
Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza and batsman Sabbir Rahman were fined 20 per cent of their match fees after admitting their part in the incident. Buttler also accepted fault but was not fined.

Mashrafe and Sabbir were sanctioned for “using language or actions which disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his dismissal” during the second ODI, which levelled the three-match series.
Sabbir’s punishment means he at risk of incurring a ban for one Test or two limited-overs internationals if he commits a similar offence within the next two years.
When is the series decider?
“The Bangladesh players overstepped in their celebration of Jos Buttler’s wicket, which prompted an inappropriate reaction from the dismissed batsman and required the on-field umpires’ intervention,” said Javagal Srinath of the International Cricket Council referees’ panel.
“We all want to see high intensity on the field of play, but only as long as it is not provoking or antagonising or disrespecting the opponent.”
The friction between the teams adds further spice to the series decider in Chittagong on Wednesday, where England will aim to become the first team to win a one-day series in Bangladesh in seven attempts.
What did Buttler say?
Buttler, who top-scored with 57 as England lost by 34 runs, said he had been “disappointed in the fashion that they celebrated” his wicket following Sunday’s contest.
The Lancashire wicketkeeper-batsman, captaining the 50-over side in the absence of Eoin Morgan, added: “Rightly they are happy to get a wicket, but there is no need to run in someone’s face and celebrate. It was an emotional game. We are grown men so that was disappointing.”
England opener Ben Stokes was then involved in a confrontation with Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal when the teams assembled for the traditional post-match handshake.
