EDF pledges price freeze for 2014
EDF Energy was the first energy firm to announce a price freeze yesterday, with fellow Big Six firms British Gas, SSE and Npower announcing cuts this morning. The pledges come in response to the government's commitment to waive the cost of some green levies, which are currently paid for through energy bills.
EDF said it doesn't anticipate that its prices will rise again in 2014 and that its "decision to hold back the full impact of rising costs" last month has been "validated by [the] confirmation that the Government will take action on energy charges".
In a statement, the company said: "EDF Energy expects to be able to maintain its lower price rise of 3.9 per cent, as anticipated. That decision left customers with bills £80-96 lower than major competitors who had announced price increases."
British Gas and SSE confirmed £50 cuts to their average dual fuel energy bills this morning, after previously announcing price hikes of 9.2 per cent and 8.2 per cent respectively.
