EASTENDERS BUZZ FOR GHERKIN
At the end of a long day The Capitalist likes nothing more than sipping a drink in the bar at the top of The Gherkin – or 30 St Mary’s Axe as it’s known to its mother – and taking in the spectacular views across London.
But we might struggle to get a table after the venue featured at the centre of an Eastenders storyline, sending private hire enquiries rocketing by 500 per cent. We hear the phone barely stopped ringing after Michael proposed to Janine at the top of tower during a recent episode.
Searcys, the upmarket caterer which operates the space in the building, has been delighted by the interest. “Most people did not know that you could use the Gherkin at all, let alone the fact that we had a wedding license and private dining rooms for hire”, says club director Joel Claudstre. Shhh, we don’t want the secret to get out.
