Dutch investigative journalist Peter R de Vries fighting for his life after assassination attempt
The well-known Dutch crime journalist Peter R de Vries was rushed to the hospital last night after being shot in Amsterdam minutes after he left a TV studio.
According to Dutch media, Five shots were fired at with close range, while police confirmed later that evening they had arrested three people in connection with the shooting.
De Vries, a prominent Dutch crime and investigative journalist, has a history of uncovering murders, kidnappers and kingpins.
Previously De Vries had received police protection after death threats were made due to his involvement in a number of high-profile murder cases.
Outcry
Messages of love, prayer and support for the journalist flooded the internet overnight, which included a post by the Royal Family of the Netherlands.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima said they were “deeply shocked; and that ‘journalists must be unthreatened and free to do their important work.”
Dutch Prime Minster Mark Rutte gave a news conference after meeting with counter-terrorism officials and the police.
Rutte said free journalism was “crucial for society” and he acknowledges the anger and devastation witness in response to the attack.
“Our thoughts are with Peter R de Vries’ loved ones. The most important thing, we hope and pray he survives,” he added.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and urge people if they have any video or photo evidence to not share the contents on social media.
