Djokovic targets Nadal and Fed’s grand slam tally
WORLD No1 Novak Djokovic aims to reel in the grand slam career wins of rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal after sealing his third Wimbledon title on Sunday.
That quest begins at the US Open next month, a tournament which nine-time Major winner Djokovic has won only once, in 2011, despite reaching at least the semi-final each year since 2007. His latest SW19 crown may have seen the 28-year-old surpass the likes of Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi on the all-time list of grand slam winners, although he still trails his modern day adversaries.
Federer, who turns 34 next month, leads the way with 17 Major wins, while out of form Nadal is locked on 14 alongside Pete Sampras, and Djokovic is keen to make headway in New York.
“To reach those two guys would be incredible,” said Djokovic. “But it’s still far away. I know what it takes to win one grand slam. It takes a lot of effort, a lot of things have to come together.
“I am approaching the US Open this year with two grand slams won and one final. The confidence level is very high and I’m going to use that to have a shot at the title.”
