Diamond adds sparkle to Twitter
The City’s Twitterati got quite the treat yesterday as it was joined by relative royalty. Bob Diamond swept into the Twittersphere, holding a big fish and adopting the handle @rediamondjr.
Surely he hasn’t stepped down from his pedestal to walk among us in the squalid world of 140-character musings, we thought at first – but according to the Wall Street Journal, a spokesperson for the former Barclays boss has confirmed it’s him.
Before you get too excited, at the time of writing he hadn’t actually tweeted yet but it can only be a matter of time. The Capitalist wonders if he’ll be adopting a similar tweeting style to his daughter Nell, who famously tweeted saying, “George Osborne and Ed Miliband you can go ahead and #HMD,” in defence of her father in 2012. Not familiar with the lingo? Er, Google it.
■ So not only can Game of Thrones, HBO’s swashbuckling steamathon, keep most British actors in pocket money – the show may also be able to help Spain’s soaring unemployment issue. Well, by a very small increment at least. According to Spanish production company Fresco Film, it had 10,000 applications to be extras on the fifth series within 24 hours of posting an ad. The series starts filming in October with Alcazar of Seville, a Moorish castle, confirmed as one backdrop. With Spanish unemployment at roughly 26 per cent, let’s hope there are plenty of roles up for grabs.
■ Friday 18 July is shaping up to be an exciting one for the City, or at least an energetic one. The list of corporate teams signed up to take part in the volleyball tournament in Wood Wharf is growing. Joining Barclays in the sand pit will be Credit Suisse, RSA, Linklaters, Fitch Ratings, Freshfields, Simmons & Simmons, Gain Capital and The Canary Wharf Group. Action for Kids, the charity behind the sudden explosion of volleyball in our midsts is looking for more corporate teams to sign up – all you need to do is pledge to raise £2,000 per team and pay the registration fee. Unless you’re scared Barclays will kick sand in your face…
