Debutants flourish as England take third place at Tokyo Sevens
ENGLAND boss Simon Amor is predicting a bright future after his inexperienced side finished third in the HSBC Sevens World Series event in Tokyo yesterday.
Series debutant Jack Clifford was among the try-scorers as England beat New Zealand in a play-off, having lost to eventual runners-up and new overall leaders South Africa in the semi-finals.
Amor’s men finished the weekend with five wins from six games and remain fourth in the standings as they head to Hong Kong for the highlight of the Sevens calendar next weekend.
“I’m positive about the overall outcome,” said the former London Scottish coach. “To bring four new guys to a tournament who have never played in an England Sevens shirt before, alongside a number of others who have only featured a few times, and come away in third shows good progress. We have made decent steps forward this weekend and the squad will be stronger for the experience.”
England beat Australia, Scotland and Spain to top their group on Saturday, and saw off Canada in the quarter-finals yesterday.
