As David Cameron relaxes in Mallorca, is the UK a better place to go on summer holiday?

What’s not to love! Consistently in the world’s top 10 most visited destinations, last year saw around 31m overseas visitors come here to enjoy what we have to offer. From West End theatre to cutting edge art, from castles to stately homes, Britain is renowned for its diverse culture and the depth of its heritage right across the country, including three of the top five most visited museums in the world. Alongside that there is a fantastic range of shopping, a live music scene second to none and a wonderful array of sport to savour – whether a Premier League match, the tennis at Wimbledon, a round of golf at St Andrews or coasteering in Wales. Our climate is also ideal for many people – not too hot in summer and perfectly mild for most of the winter. Whether it’s the natural beauty of the Highlands, the miles of beaches along the Cornish coast or the vibrancy of London, there’s something here for everyone.

Having endured the rainiest summer on record, it’s no surprise that Brits want to go abroad for their holidays to enjoy some sunshine. As a result, the decision to stay in Britain or go abroad is not made on price alone. However, foreign travellers have a fantastic choice of holidays abroad, many of which are cheaper than holidaying at home when you compare like for like. With food and petrol prices rising, and the high costs of attractions like theme parks and day trips in the UK, a family holiday abroad can work out far cheaper – particularly if you go to all-inclusive resorts where food, drinks, kids clubs, watersports and other sports activities are included in the price. All-inclusive holidays really do offer great value for money. Case study research we conducted last year showed that a family of four could save around £500 on a holiday by booking all-inclusive, over a bed and breakfast alternative.
