Cowes Week Diary: Cowes results could lead to family feud
THE SHARP end of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is upon us, as racing finishes today for most classes.
Sailors will know their results and, therefore, what they have to do on the water to end up on the podium.
Chris Taylor in J.A.T. is looking very strong in the Under-25 Trophy with four race wins, which also puts him third in the White Group overall (the smaller day boats), behind Aimee, a dragon in second and the leader Lady Penelope, a squib. It’s great for the squibs as they celebrate their 45th anniversary this year.
The Black Group (larger boats) is being dominated by my extended family with the leader, First Sailing, skippered by my step-brother David Vines, with his crew from Slovakia and Croatia. And in second is Yes, skippered by my husband Adam. Hopefully results today don’t lead to a family argument!
Last night, the first main trophy of the week was awarded on Ladies Day to Helena Lucas for her outstanding contribution to sailing, including being Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist.
The Fastnet Race starts on Sunday and many of the sailors will be preparing their boats, ensuring all the required safety kit is on board, they are fully stocked with supplies all equipment is ready and they get in as much sleep as possible.
It’s going to be all hands on deck – good luck to them all.
