Commuters face delays as bad weather drags on
COMMUTERS in London were bracing themselves for more travel disruption today as Britain remained in the grip of the deep freeze.
Some of the worst weather in years has hit trains, flights and roads and forced thousands of schools to close, with many said likely to remain shut today.
Train operators voiced hopes that services would return to a more normal level than yesterday, although they warned of delays and advised passengers to check before they travel.
One train operator, Southeastern, said it was planning to run more services than it did yesterday, although a revised timetable would remain in place.
A spokesman for the Association of Train Operating Companies said: “Services will probably be better than they were yesterday, but weather conditions will remain pretty tricky.”
A spokeswoman for airport operator BAA at Heathrow said the London airport was not expecting more heavy snow, although delays remained probable because of a knock-on effect from bad weather at airports elsewhere.
The Meteorological Office said the majority of heavy snowfalls in London and the south-east were probably over, but more outbreaks were likely between late morning and the evening.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Maximum temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing.”
